Do Machine Learning Models Memorize or Generalize?
Describes the recently discovered phenomenon wherein machine learning models switch from memorizing training data to being able to generalize correctly on unseen inputs. It describes techniques that may be used in the future to help interpret the behavior of Large Language Models (LLMs).VISPUR: Visual Aids for Identifying and Interpreting Spurious Associations in Data-Driven Decisions
While the approach outlined in this paper is interesting, I am including it to highlight the authors’ presentation of how spurious data associations can cause humans who are using decision intelligence systems to make suboptimal decisions.
Self-supervised learning of hologram reconstruction using physics consistency
Rather than using lots of data to train a neural net, a team of researchers at UCLA used the laws of physics and “thought experiments,” resulting in a model that accurately reconstructed microscopic images.

Here is yet another survey on Generative AI. There are some interesting findings, especially around perceived risks and barriers to implementation.
How blockchain could safeguard IP in an AI-enabled world
This is a short thought piece, also from KPMG, on how blockchain technology could be used to support attribution and royalty payments for content generators.
Coolest thing I saw…
